Birds and Birders Flock to Rehoboth Beach

A “birdbrain” and looking for things to do in Rehoboth DE? The Rehoboth Beach area houses many wonderful wildlife refuges, parks, and preserves where different types of birds can be spotted in all seasons.

Closest to Rehoboth Beach, Gordon’s Pond is particularly known for its ever-changing list of bird residents that mark the shifting seasons and make the area perfect for Delware birding year-round. Summer weather attractions the occasional pair of Piping Plovers, as well as Seaside Sparrows and Pine Warblers that have come to breed. In winter, species such as loons, scoters, Northern Gannets, Snow Geese, and Bald Eagles can be seen flying over the sea just a couple hundred yards to the east. Milder seasons like spring and fall bring on flocks of migrating shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds, including Brown-Headed Nuthatches and their calls that are reminiscent of the high-pitched squeak of a rubber duck.

Milford Neck, located seven miles northeast of Milford, contains a hidden birding treasure: a two and a half mile stretch of coastal forest and freshwater marshland from Scott’s Corners to Big Stone Beach that opens up excellent opportunities for spotting rail, such as Virginia Rail, Sora, and Black. Whip-Poor-Wills and Chuck-Will’s-Widows are also abundant here, their distinct calls heard during the spring and summer months. The beach along Delaware Bay is home to gulls, shorebirds, and ducks.

Five miles northeast of Milton, Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge has some of the state’s best birding. Its wetland habitats and expansive trail network provide all kinds of opportunities to spot species of shorebirds, snip, terns, bitterns, rails, falcons, and sparrows. Look out for Snow Geese and rarer species, such as Cackling Goose and Ross’ Goose.
