A Foreign Treat for Your Time in Rehoboth Beach
At Kaisy’s Delights, the dish du jour is the Kaiserschmarm—or the Kaisy, as the shop calls it. A traditional Austrian treat originating from the Alps region between Austria and Italy known as Tyrol, the Kaiserschmarm is a scrambled pancake topped with either savory or sweet toppings, making it the perfect treat year-round. The name Kaiserschmarm stands for “imperial mess,” after the king’s love of the messy but delicious dish. For our sakes, the owners at Kaisy’s Delights not only brought their favorite traditional treat to America, but also shortened its pronunciation to Kaisy.
The shop not only serves their namesake treat (topped with anything from fruit, ice cream, and whipped cream to sausage, bacon, and scrambled eggs), but a variety of region cuisines from Austria and France as well. Breakfast sandwiches with combinations of meat, eggs, and cheese are served atop Kaiser rolls. Latkes aren’t just available on Hanukkah, but year-round, offered with your choice of side. Goulash and vegetable soup are available in a variety of sizes. Quiches come with mixed vegetables, or prepared in the traditional Lorraine style with bacon and cheese.
The coffee choices at Kaisy’s Delights are just as extensive as the food options, if not even more so. Hot coffee and tea drinks are offered in twelve-ounce and sixteen-ounce increments, from hot cocoas and lattés to macchiatos and drip coffee. Cold drinks range from cappuccinos and cold brew coffees to iced teas, lemonade, milk, juices, and old-fashioned bottled sodas. Kaisy’s Delights has two locations, with one location in Lewes Beach and one in downtown Rehoboth. The shop is open from 7:30am to 6:00pm on Sunday through Thursday and from 7:30am to 8:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays at its Rehoboth location, while the Lewes location is open daily from 6:00am to 8:00pm.
